Movie Review: Crazy Rich Asians

She just think you’re some like unrefined banana. Yellow on the outside, and white on the inside.

Crazy Rich Asians is based on the book of the same name by Kevin Kwan. It is directed by Jon M. Chu and it stars Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina and Henry Golding.

When Rachel (Constance Wu) is asked by Nick Young (Henry Golding) to go to Singapore to attend a friends wedding, things doesn’t go smoothly as Rachel finds out more information about Nick and his family.

The Good

It’s easy to scoff at romantic comedies as it feels like there’s a very formulaic approach to it. There’s no denying the Crazy Rich Asians is indeed a romantic comedy but it’s one that manages to weave in and out of the cliches of a typical rom-com but also delivers a compelling story with compelling characters.

8

One of the biggest worry is how can a normal person relate to rich people problems. The story however, doesn’t touch around that but rather it focuses on Rachel and his relationship with Nick. As she’s the audience’s avatar, she is reacting how a normal person reacts to everything that’s happening around her and it makes her very relatable.

Henry Golding is also great, he’s incredibly charismatic and very likeable. Despite his very rich background you still root for the guy, you root for the couple in general, you’re absolutely hoping their relationship to work out.

1

The other characters are also great from Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina and even Ken Jeong. The cinematography also stands out as there are plenty of beautiful shots of Singapore as well as the presentation of the wedding.

The Bad

No bad thing to say about this movie

Rating

5

Overall Crazy Rich Asians was a surprise, it’s story telling is very reminiscent of classic romantic movies in the 60s. It’s got an engaging story and likeable characters. You will without a doubt leave the theater with a smile after watching this movie, highly recommended.

PS: DO NOT watch this movie with an empty stomach as there are plenty of delicious food shown in the screen. 😛

Movie Review: Deadpool 2

Well, that’s just lazy writing.

Deadpool 2 is directed by David Leitch, stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz and Julian Dennison.

When Deadpool befriends a young mutant he tries to stop a rampaging Cable, played by Josh Brolin, from killing the kid.

The Good

Deadpool is back and he’s even funnier than ever, with so many new avenues to pull his jokes from Deadpool 2 doesn’t hold back with the humour. Ryan Reynolds is still excellent as Deadpool and you can tell that’s he’s having a lot of fun reprising the role

__5adf673205dfe.jpg

A great addition to this universe is Zazie Beetz as Domino. With her powers being extremely lucky, her powers work in a final destination-esque way affecting everyone around negatively except her. She is fascinating to watch and it also helps that she’s incredibly funny too.

The Bad

Unfortunately the movie’s plot take a step back as the movie is so funny, you never feel any real stakes are on the line. Where you are meant to care about Deadpool’s relationship with Russell, played by Julian Dennison, that relationship felt lacking. At times you question why Deadpool is trying so hard to save this kid.

Another issue is the CG, at certain parts it looks unpolished and it can take you out of the film momentarily.

Rating

Overall Deadpool 2 is still a very fun movie, you got few new characters all of it are interesting to say the least but Domino stole the spotlight in terms of new characters.

__5ad90232d3084

The movie is hilarious and is able to make tons of references and if you catch them you’ll definitely laugh out loud. There are also pleasant surprises within the movie that helps elevate it a bit. However with a weaker plot than the first you probably won’t care about the story all that much.

Good Bad 3.8/5
    • Incredibly Funny
    • Zazie Beetz as Domino
    • Weak Plot
    • Poor CGI

Movie Review: Game Night

You’re like a double threat. Brains… and you’re British.

Game Night is directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. It stars Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Klye Chandler and Jesse Plemons.

Max and Annie holds regular Game Nights at their place but when Brooks, Max’s brother show up, he promises a Game Night they will never forget.

The Good

One of the biggest surprise of this movie is how actually good this movie was. It’s incredibly funny and this is Jason Bateman at his peak. His comedic timing is perfect and accompanied by Rachel McAdams they make a very comedic couple.

01

One of the best part of the movie though is Jesse Plemons, as he steals this movie and easily becomes one of the best part of the film. The movie also had some very interesting cinematography from wide suburban shots that looks like a game board to a seemingly one shot take that keeps your eyes glued to the screen.

The Bad

The only real problem with this movie is the third act. It’s not necessarily bad but rather just a weaker part of the movie. It’s not as funny nor exciting but it leads up to a run of the mill comedy climax.

Overall Game Night is an incredibly funny movie, the cast and were all likable and hilarious in their own ways and the movie had plenty of surprises to offer. If you’re looking for a fun movie to watch, definitely check out Game Night.

Movie Review: Pitch Perfect 3

Last Call, Pitches

Pitch Perfect 3 is the third movie in the Pitch Perfect series. It’s Directed Trish Sie and it stars the usual Pitch Perfect crew with Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp and Rebel Wilson.

The Good

There’s very little good things about this movie, mainly if you’re someone who’s into covers and the singing battle they call a Riff-off you might enjoy the parts where they do so.

The Bad

This was a painful movie with an abundance of unfunny fat jokes. Rebel Wilson who was tolerable in the first movie, was annoying in this movie. Another annoying part is DJ Khaled, granted he’s not in screen a lot but do they mention his name a hundred times beating you over the head with the fact that he’s in the movie.

img_6_desktop

Anna Kendrick seems like she’s lost passion with this project and was clearly doing this for the paycheck and also we get John Lithgow with a terrible Australian accent.

Overall there’s really no big reason to watch this in the cinemas. It’s unfunny and even the singing wasn’t as good as before. Pitch Perfect 3 is what you call a cash grab taking advantage of naive viewers thinking they would go in there and have a good time. Not Recommended, (just keep watching the first one).

Movie Review: Sausage Party

Once you see that s***, it’ll f*** you up for life. Good luck! Have fun!

Sausage Party is an R-Rated animated movie directed by Greg Tiernan & Conrad Vernon. It stars Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill and more.

sausage-party-scene-2

The groceries in the Shopwell’s Grocery comes to life as plenty of them believe that once they leave the store the gods (humans) will provide them a better life to which they can do anything they want.

The Good

Sausage Party is easily one of this year’s most memorable movies. With it’s ridiculous set up and crude humour it stands out from all the other animated movies that came out this year.

movie-scene1

Speaking of the humour, this movie is undeniably funny, it’s rude at times and it makes use of people’s stereotypes and it does it blatantly and as bad as it sounds it’s incredibly hilarious. Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig were great at their parts however the supporting cast also get’s a mention as everyone did great voicing their characters.

The Bad

As mentioned, the humour here is crude and that can be a bad thing as it is borderline offensive. This movie caters to a specific type of crowd and for many this won’t be their cup of tea.

Rating

Overall, if you’re someone who’s not easily offended or easily disturbed and who doesn’t mind extreme crude humour every now and then. You will most likely enjoy Sausage Party. There are plenty of jokes filled with sexual innuendos, racial stereotypes and even takes shot at religious ideologies. To the movie’s credit majority of it works and are funny.

However there are scenes which are incredibly disturbing if not revolting. This movie will not be for everyone to enjoy but for the crowd that this movie caters to, with an unforgettable ending, this movie is a treat.

Movie Review: This Giant Papier-Mache Boulder is Actually Really Heavy

Oh my god we’re lost in space

6940524_4

Directed, written and starred by Christian Nicoloson, this movie follows three guys who goes into a nerd convention and upon watching a screening for a B-grade science-fiction film, are sucked into the movie’s universe.

The Good

The first third of this movie is incredibly funny, the movie is extremely self-aware, it knows it’s audience, it knows it doesn’t have a big budget, it knows itself that it too is a B-Grade Science Fiction movie. It’s parodying itself and majority of the time it’s effective. It has a lot of humour to offer and most of the time it’s clever.

9c98cd6da090128c8c46524eb57faffa_700x259

The movie is consistent to it’s theme and it knows how to work it very well, it captures the tropes from 80s science fiction films and works it on it’s favour. From the cinematography to the movie’s overall look, and that gives it a very unique yet impressive take on parodies.

The Bad

Unfortunately the movie does suffer from several problems and it’s heavily noticeable. The pacing is slowed down tremendously around the second and third act and the story drags at this point onward. The movie is two hours long, and for a movie that’s a parody, it is thirty minutes longer than it needed to be.

o_19ssqiav5193o1dknciikr115ua

Though it offered a lot of clever jokes the use of fart jokes did downgrade this movie’s quality down a bit.

Rating

emma-hair

Overall this movie is fun, the characters looked like they’re having fun and it resonates throughout the movie. For what it’s going for, it is competently well filmed and well edited. Even with it’s problems, if you enjoy indie-films, this is a movie worth checking out.

Good Bad 3.7/5

  • Great Consistent Look

Movie Review: Kimi no na wa (Your Name)

Kimi no na wa (Your Name) is the latest movie from acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai.

clokkcvuyaeyvul

Kimi no na wa tells the story of Taki and Mitsuha, both live miles apart from each other but were able through connect through their dreams and together form a bond that transcends through time.

The Good

This is easily the best looking anime movie this year, the artwork in this movie is gorgeous. The details are outstanding at its a pure joy to look at. Once again Makoto Shinkai has out done himself and delivered an artistically unforgettable movie.

tumblr_inline_mq14myc9cs1qz4rgp

Along with the beautiful artwork the story is also incredible, though what starts as a cliched love story becomes something so much more around the movie’s second act. Accompanied by sci-fi and fantasy elements the story enthralls from start to finish. The characters are charming and funny, and though the movie is very strong with its romantic presence, the comedic parts also hit.

The Bad

As mentioned the movie is very cliched in terms of its romantic aspects, also like similar to other Makoto Shinkai movies it starts quite slow, however if you’re a fan, it’s an issue not worth thinking of.

If you’re familiar with Makoto Shinkai’s work, you know what you’re getting into. That said, Kimi no na wa is without a doubt one of the best movies of the year, from the captivating romantic story to the hard hitting drama, this will no doubt pull the heartstrings of many. The movie is lovely to look at, the characters are great and the fantasy / sci-fi aspect of it is fascinating. This movie is a masterpiece and without a doubt the best anime movie of the year.
